A beginner’s guide to tournament poker

A poker tournament can involve various different poker variants. The way that the tournament would be played would also depend on the structure of the tournament. Tournaments can be a lot of fun for any poker player since they involve a lot of action and prolonged play which provides a lot of excitement.

Common characteristics

In most cases, the players would need to register for the poker tournament. The players will also be required to buy in for the tournament. Buy in is the amount of chips that you initially purchase at the beginning of a tournament. In some tournaments, rebuys would be allowed so you would be able to top up your chips during the middle of the tournament by purchasing additional chips. Mainly, this feature is seen in the cash games. In tournaments like WSOP, the rebuys are not allowed and when you run out of chips, you would be out of the game. There would be a prize involved in the tournaments. There could be a seat for a bigger tournament or prize money which would be the prize.

Typical tournaments

Multi table tournaments: the multi table tournaments would require the players to fight their way through different tables and players. The stakes and the blinds involved would be predetermined before the tournament starts. They would increase with the tournament proceeding ahead or as the players would reach higher tournament levels. In order to join the game, you will have to buy in and would sit at one of the tables. As the game progresses and more players drop out, the players would be rearranged so that there can be a full table. The player that wins at the final table would be the winner for the tournament.

Sit and Go Tournaments: these are the simplest possible type of FullTilt poker tournaments. There are quite a lot of online sites where these tournaments are played all the time. Once you have registered for the tournament and have bought the necessary chips, you can sit at a table and wait for opponents. When the table is full, the tournament would start.

Satellite tournaments: the satellite tournaments can either be multi table or sit and go with smaller buy ins. The prize for a tournament of this nature would be a seat at a high level tournament. The seat could even be for another important satellite tournament or directly for an ultimate tournament. The satellite tournaments for the World Series of Poker normally have multiple levels and the prize would be the buy in for one of the events at WSOP. The satellite event may cover the buy in amount for the main event. In some cases, even the additional expenses would be paid for the winner of the satellite tournament. However, in order to win the prize, the player will have to play through various different levels of satellite tournaments in order to win the prize.
